Hireth Architects was established by RIBA Chartered Architect Clare Mackness in Trewellard, West Cornwall.
Clare grew up in Cornwall and after undertaking her architectural training at the Welsh School of Architecture in Cardiff, has worked in Sydney & London before returning to Cornwall 2014.
On her return to Cornwall, Clare worked for RLT Architects where she was Project Architect and worked on a wide range of projects from feasibility schemes, through to project completion on site. Using various methods of project presentation, utilising physical models and hand sketching to CAD and 3d modelling Clare was part of a successful studio team achieving planning consents on significant projects in the county and completing a range of high quality developments. Whilst no longer full time with RLT Architects, Clare still has a consultancy role with RLT.
HIRETH – a Cornish word that has no direct translation but is more of a feeling:
‘a feeling of home, of belonging’
Returning to Cornwall has been a homecoming for Clare and ‘Hireth’ has played a big part in her reasoning for establishing the Practice in West Cornwall. As such, ‘Hireth’ seemed befitting for the name of the Practice with the iconic ‘Tin Mine’ as the logo.
MY HIRETH
Clare Mackness ‘23
Hear
Wind through granite where machines once roared
Chough calls
Small feet rumbling passed at a gallop
Oar on pin
Bellow of cows
Glasses clinking
Low mummering voices of words made mainly of vowels
Wind through the cracked window
Roar of the cox
Rain
The call of the pager asking to help a stranger
Crackle of the fire coming to life
Splash of a puddle in the sand how different to a puddle in the earth
Laughter with friends
Bubbles effervescing in a glass
Smell
The Coconut Gorse
Hot shells dry in the sun
Warm granite with lichen crispy
The sea – how faint in the calm and strong in the storm
Sun cream
Of effort in a gig
Warm woodsmoke as the fire comes to life
See
The mine
The cliff
The granite
The Carn
The sea
The blue
The distance
The lights afar
The blinking of the light warning sailors to beware
The flicker of the flame in the hearth
Taste
Hot peppery pasty
Sweet crab
Chicken eaten with the hand
Salt in the air
Tang of fermented apples
Salty chips mixed with sand and suncream
Touch
Chill of sea on limb
Damp bracken
Rough Stone
Heavy foggy air
A warm hug
Heat from the flame of the woodburning stove
Warm soft fur beside me, moving gently to the rhythm of life
